Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center

The Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center is the southernmost and most comprehensive of Redwood National and State Parks’ five visitor centers, set beside Freshwater Beach. I’d stop early in a park visit: the film, exhibits and staff’s route advice can help you choose what to do next, and the beach makes it easy to turn an orientation stop into a longer break.

About a mile south of Orick, follow the brown signs for Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center / Park Information from US-101. The center sits about a quarter-mile west of the highway and isn’t visible from the road; some map pins place it in Orick proper. The lot accommodates RVs and trailers. Ramps on both sides lead into accessible routes; accessible flush restrooms and wheelchairs are available.

The displays cover Yurok culture, art and history alongside redwood ecology. There’s a park film, park information and Junior Ranger material, so it’s useful for families. Give it a little time instead of just picking up a map.

Step down from the center to Freshwater Beach for an open Pacific shoreline and a walk. The water is very cold, currents can be swift and sneaker waves are a hazard, so watch the ocean while you explore.

The center honors Thomas H. Kuchel, a California senator from 1953 to 1969 whose work helped establish Redwood National Park. Kuchel joined Henry M. Jackson and Alan Bible in sponsoring the 1968 bill that created it. The building is near the mouth of Redwood Creek, on a site where a lumber mill operated in the 1960s, before the park took shape.
