Trail guide
Elam Creek Loop is the 20-mile southern horse-trail circuit from Orick Rodeo Grounds. It follows the ridge network toward Elam Creek, circles through the creek-side forest, then returns on part of the same approach. Allow about 10 to 12 hours for the whole trip; this is a hard, remote day, not a quick walk to camp. Shorter camp-access hikes from other trailheads are different routes. The park’s map calls the grades moderate, but the distance and route-finding make the full loop a serious hike.
From the Rodeo Grounds, follow the Ridge approach into the McArthur and Elam sections. You move between firmer mapped ridge trail, old logging roads, and faint foot tread. Some junctions are unsigned, and a few logging-road forks are easy to miss on a general park map. Download the full line for offline use before you start; don’t assume every broad road is the trail.
A lot of the route is in alder and mixed forest, with second-growth redwoods and smaller old-growth patches. The route’s payoff is the changing forest and the creek country, not a summit lookout. Near Elam Camp, a steep descent of about 600 feet over 1.5 miles brings you into the low creek-side forest. A short, steep sandy side path near camp reaches the mouth of Elam Creek, where it enters Redwood Creek. It’s informal access, separate from the mapped loop; the pale gravel bar makes a clear foreground for the water and trees.
The backcountry camp has a pit toilet, tables, fire rings, bear lockers, and a corral. There’s no treated drinking water; the seasonal water is non-potable, so bring drinking water or treat creek water. If you plan to stay overnight, get the free backcountry permit first. The camp is a destination on this route, but camping is optional and no permit is needed for a day hike.
Pets are prohibited on park trails. Day-use parking at Orick Rodeo Grounds is fee-based. Check current park conditions before setting out, because creek and trail access can change.
