Hana Bay Beach Park

Overview

Right in the heart of Hana, this mellow black sand beach is the town’s backyard—easy to reach, low-key, and a perfect breather on the Road to Hana. Expect a local vibe with outrigger canoes, a broad curve of dark sand, and green hills framing the bay.

What you’ll see

• A photogenic sweep of black sand dotted with colorful small boats.
• The old pier on the right side of the bay, which lines up great views of lava cliffs and the coastline.
• Ka’uiki Hill anchoring the far end of the bay, a prominent landmark tied to local legend.

Facilities

This is one of the few easy, fully set-up stops in Hana: free parking right by the sand, restrooms and outdoor showers, picnic tables, BBQ grills, and a pavilion. Food isn’t sold on the beach, but small snack spots are just up the road in town.

Swimming and safety

The bay is generally calm and shallow near shore—good for a quick dip—though you’ll find rocks underfoot in places and the sand can be coarse. If you wander toward the wharf for views, stay off any decaying concrete; parts of the structure are unsafe.

Vibe and culture

This is a community gathering place used by local families and canoe clubs, and it occasionally hosts events like canoe regattas or the taro festival. Be extra courteous: keep it quiet, pack out trash, and don’t block driveways or roads.

Best time to visit

Open roughly 7 AM–10 PM. Mornings are the sweet spot—cooler, softer light, and usually quiet. Midday (around 12–3 PM) is the busiest. If it’s raining, the pavilion makes an easy picnic backup. Weekdays are typically calmer than weekends and event days.
