Fagan's Cross Trail

This is Hana’s leg-stretcher: a short, steady, fully paved climb up Lyon Hill to a 20‑foot lava‑stone memorial cross and sweeping views of Hana town, Hana Bay, and the green flanks of Haleakala. It’s only about 1.5 miles round-trip (out-and-back) with roughly 500 feet of gain, but the payoff is outsized for the effort.

What you’ll see: open pastureland, grazing cattle, and ocean views that open up within minutes. At the top, the 1960 volcanic-rock Fagan’s Cross honors Paul I. Fagan, who jump-started Hana’s ranching and tourism era. The summit is a quiet community spot—sunrise here is special, and locals gather for Easter sunrise services.

Trail basics: plan 20–30 minutes of walking time, more if you linger at the top. The path is fully paved and climbs steadily—easy footing, but it’s not flat. Start directly across from the Travaasa Hana resort (5031 Hana Highway) at the small gazebo. Expect a mellow, often uncrowded outing. Though paved, the grade and occasional cattle guards make it impractical for strollers or wheelchairs. There’s a steep dirt road to the cross that’s gated to vehicles—hiking only.

Tips and cautions: ants are notorious around the cross—keep food and packs off the ground. You’re passing through active pasture; give cows space and don’t startle them. The route is mostly exposed, so bring a hat and sunscreen if you’re hitting it midday. Hana’s weather runs lush and drizzly at times, but the pavement keeps footing reliable.

Best time to hike: year-round. Sunrise and sunset deliver cooler temps and the best light for photos (sunrise is the standout). Midday gets hot and squinty, and you’ll lose some drama in the views.

Logistics: park at the Hana Hotel lot across from the trailhead. Comfortable walking shoes are plenty for this one.
