Fagan’s Cross Trail

Fagan’s Cross Trail is a 1.5-mile out-and-back on a paved pasture road above Hāna. It climbs to a lava-rock memorial cross on Puʻu o Kahaula, with wide views over town, Hāna Bay and the east coast. Allow about an hour with time at the top. It suits a short hill climb with a clear landmark at the end; the pavement makes footing simple, but the route is steep in places.

The described start is a small wooden pedestrian gate by the uphill corner of Hāna-Māui Resort’s guest parking lot, across Hāna Highway. The walk crosses private pasture, and I couldn’t verify current permission to enter or park. Check the gate signs and ask the landowner or resort about current access before setting out. If permission isn’t clear, skip it. Close the gate behind you.

The lane winds uphill through open pasture. Expect cattle grates and, if livestock have been through, droppings on the pavement. The views open as you climb, looking back toward Hāna and the coast. The 1.5-mile figure includes the walk back; the mapped line shows the one-way path once.

The dark lava-rock cross is a memorial to Paul Irving Fagan Sr., erected in the early 1960s. From the open hilltop you can look across much of the Hāna district toward the ocean. If you take a photo, include a strip of coastline with the cross so the frame shows both the landmark and its setting.
