The building usually opens around Memorial Day weekend and closes on the last Sunday in September. It’s off Highway 53, about 25 miles south of International Falls. A small-boat launch and dock are right here, so you can pair the indoor orientation stop with lake access.

The center is wheelchair accessible, and the seasonal restrooms are accessible too. There are four marked spaces immediately in front, including one accessible space. That same shoreline serves boat-launch traffic, and visitors report that parking can get tight when the ramp is busy.

Kabetogama Lake Visitor Center is a compact National Park Service center on the lake’s southwest shore, in the small community of Kabetogama. It’s a useful first stop if you want to get your bearings before heading out on the water; think ranger help, a bookstore and exhibits, not a museum that takes half a day.

Find your way around insideThe bookstore is just left of the entrance.

The bookstore is just left of the entrance. Farther in, the ranger desk faces a large illuminated map that highlights campsites and visitor destinations; the room then opens into an exhibit area. There’s also an outdoor bulletin board with a park map and brochures. Visitors often call out the staff’s help, and the map is a good place to start turning a vague lake plan into a real destination.

A lake of islandsKabetogama Lake stretches 15 miles and has 200 islands and 78 miles of shoreline.

Kabetogama Lake stretches 15 miles and has 200 islands and 78 miles of shoreline. That scale is the reason the illuminated map earns its place: many of the destinations you’re planning for sit along a broad, island-filled lake rather than along one road. The center’s windows also look out toward the water and marina.
