Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens is a County of Maui park at the entrance to ʻĪao Valley, with landscaped paths through gardens and traditional structures representing seven cultural traditions in Hawaiʻi. I’d make it a short walk before or after ʻĪao Valley State Monument: it’s a cultural visit in its own right, not a hike into the valley.

The County identifies Hawaiian, Filipino, Chinese, Japanese, Portuguese, Korean and Puerto Rican areas. Look for an early Hawaiian hale, a Filipino Bahay Kubo, Chinese and Korean pavilions, and a Portuguese-style villa; a New England saltbox adds another architectural contrast. The best part is seeing these very different structures within one garden campus, rather than reading about them in a display case.

This is also a public picnic park, so expect to share the paths and grounds with people using the shelters. The County lists grill-equipped pavilions, tables, two parking areas and public restrooms, plus accessible parking, a pathway, restrooms and pavilions. There’s no food service or drinking water listed, so bring your own if you want to picnic.

Look up the valleyThe garden sits beside the Wailuku River with ʻĪao’s steep green slopes around it.

The garden sits beside the Wailuku River with ʻĪao’s steep green slopes around it. For a photo, frame one pavilion against the valley walls; you’ll get both the distinctive roofline and the setting instead of a tight crop that could be anywhere.

Kepaniwai recalls the 1790 Battle of Kepaniwai between Kamehameha I’s forces and Maui ruler Kahekili. The gardens add a later layer of Hawaiʻi history: a bronze pair of Japanese sugar-cane workers was erected in 1985 to mark the centennial of Japanese immigration to Hawaiʻi in 1885.
