This is a mellow, wind‑kissed coastal walk through a 277‑acre refuge of dunes, wetlands, shoreline, and reef. Expect level terrain on dirt, sand, and some cobbles—better for wanderers than peak‑baggers. Typical outings run 2.6–4.0 miles total (out and back), depending on where you turn around. If you like quiet, wildlife, and cultural landscapes over dramatic climbs, this one hits the mark.
Route Snapshot
From the dirt parking area, follow the broad track into the refuge. Keep straight at the first fork to reach the coast. You’ll pass interpretive signs near the former dairy, then continue along the shoreline path toward the mouth of Waiheʻe Stream; turn around whenever the sand and rock walking feels “enough” and retrace your steps. Surfaces are mostly flat but can be soft or uneven in spots.
What You’ll See
Restored, spring‑fed wetlands host endangered Hawaiian waterbirds like the aeʻo (Hawaiian stilt) and ʻalae keʻokeʻo (Hawaiian coot). Along the shore, keep respectful distance from Hawaiian monk seals or green sea turtles if you’re lucky enough to spot them. Cultural remains of two historic Hawaiian villages, heiau, and an inland fishpond sit within the refuge—stay on marked paths and heed kapu signs. Offshore lies a wide fringing reef that helped sustain traditional fishing here. The dunes themselves are wind‑built and among the best surviving examples on Maui, rising impressively above the flats.

There’s no posted fee, and day use is welcomed; plan visits for daylight. Portable toilets have been reported, but amenities are otherwise minimal. Pets are not allowed to protect sensitive wildlife and habitat. Wind and sun are common—bring brimmed hats, layers, and water. Stay on established routes and do not enter fenced dune areas or approach cultural sites.

Go when the light is soft and winds calmer—typically mornings or late afternoon. Weekdays feel especially peaceful. After heavy weather, expect softer sand and more uneven footing. If conditions look blustery, consider a shorter out‑and‑back.
