Pioneer Mill Smokestack is a 225-foot brick-and-concrete chimney built in 1928 for West Maui’s sugar mill. It was a landmark for drivers and fishermen alike, and the stack still marks the former mill site. Think of this as a roadside piece of Lahaina history, not the open-air museum older descriptions may suggest.

How the mill workedPioneer Mill began in 1860 as the first plantation to grow sugar commercially in Lahaina.

Pioneer Mill began in 1860 as the first plantation to grow sugar commercially in Lahaina. At its peak in the 1960s, the mill processed up to 60,000 tons of sugar a year. Narrow-gauge trains carried cane along West Maui’s mountain slopes from the 1880s until trucks replaced them in 1953.

The 2023 wildfire destroyed the outdoor display of locomotives and mill machinery, while the smokestack survived. The site sold in 2026 and was reported in use as a baseyard; public entry, visitor parking and other amenities have not been confirmed. Keep to public roads and don’t plan on entering the property or visiting an open exhibit.
