Pāpawai Scenic Lookout

Pāpawai Scenic Lookout is a small roadside viewpoint above the west side of Maʻalaea Bay, directly off Honoapiʻilani Highway. It’s an easy stop for the wide-water view and, in winter, a place to scan for humpbacks. The bay view is worthwhile on its own; whale sightings are a bonus, never guaranteed.

Hawaiʻi’s humpback season generally runs from November through April, with January through March the peak. Maui Nui’s shallow waters are part of the whales’ winter breeding, birthing and nursing habitat. Give yourself time to scan the water; binoculars help pick out distant spouts or tail activity. Some visits turn up whales and others don’t.

The lookout faces across Maʻalaea Bay, with a rocky, grass-covered headland close by and open water beyond. On a clear day the horizon opens toward neighboring islands, though visibility changes which ones stand out. For a photo, keep part of the rocky shoreline in the foreground; it gives the bay view context and scale.

The turnout is between mile markers 8 and 9. Parking is limited and can get tight during whale season, so don’t count on an open space at busy times. You can see the view from the parking area; if whales are quiet, pause to scan the bay rather than treating the stop as worthwhile only when something is breaching.
