Ukumehame Beach Park

Ukumehame Beach Park is a 3.5-acre oceanfront beach park along Honoapiʻilani Highway in West Maui. It is an easy place to get out for a picnic, watch the surf or look across the Pacific toward neighboring islands. The shore has shallow reef and rocky footing, and the water can be rough, so it is not a reliable relaxed-swim stop. Surfers and paddlers use this stretch, sometimes called Thousand Peaks, though that name covers more shoreline than the park itself. Mornings are often calmer, but conditions still vary.

There are six picnic tables, one grill and two portable toilets. The south lot has 12 spaces, with gravel and shoulder parking as well. There is no potable water, so bring what you need; keep the car on firm ground because loose sand can trap vehicles. Trees shade parts of the grassy park, while the beach is exposed. Bring your own meal; there is no food service at the park.

The open shoreline looks toward neighboring islands, and sunsets are a draw. Winter can bring whale-watching from shore. When driftwood is on the sand, frame a trunk against the water to give the broad horizon some foreground. The highway runs right behind the park, so expect traffic noise along with the ocean.
