A simple, scenic DOC campground on the north end of Lake Mapourika, about 15 km north of Franz Josef. It’s two adjacent areas — “Otto” and “MacDonalds” — tucked just off SH6 in a forested lakeside clearing. Despite the highway, nights are typically quiet and the lake and mountain backdrop steals the show.
The lake is your playground: short walk to the shore for swimming, paddling/boating, and trout fishing. There are informal walks nearby, and the lakeside makes an easy evening amble for photographs.
Sandflies and mosquitos love dawn and dusk here — plan accordingly. Kea sometimes nose around; protect wipers and any tempting rubber trim overnight. You may hear a touch of road noise at some sites, but most campers report peaceful nights.
Booking is required year‑round and needs to be done online before you arrive (coverage at camp is patchy). As of December 4, 2025: Adult NZ$18/night, Child 5–17 NZ$9/night, Infants free. The DOC Campsite Pass is accepted, but you still must book online. If staff have to make the booking for you, there’s a NZ$10 surcharge. Rangers do check. No fires and no dogs.
Expect little to no reception in the campground itself; some people find a couple of bars of 4G down at the lakeshore.
Sunset is the golden hour — stroll to the lake for reflections and color. If bugs bother you, plan your lake time for mid‑day or cover up at dawn/dusk, especially in warmer months. Book ahead, download your confirmation before you roll in, and arrive with your drinking water sorted.
