“You're coming up on Jetty Bay at Lake Māpōurika, a good stop for a lake view without a hike. The wharf puts you straight beside the water; scan the lake for kāmana, or crested grebes, though sightings aren't guaranteed.”

More about Jetty Bay, Lake Māpōurika

A quick stop on the south shoreJetty Bay is the public lakeside access at the south end of Lake Māpōurika, about 8.

Jetty Bay is the public lakeside access at the south end of Lake Māpōurika, about 8.6 km north of Franz Josef village, off SH6. The wharf and concrete boat ramp put you straight at the water. It works well as a short leg-stretch or picnic stop, or as the access point for boating; much of the lake’s shoreline is difficult to reach on foot, so this is a small window onto a much larger lake.

What is hereThere is a wharf, a concrete launch ramp, a picnic table, nearby parking and a basic pit toilet.

There is a wharf, a concrete launch ramp, a picnic table, nearby parking and a basic pit toilet. Bring your own food and drinking water; there is no food service or drinking-water supply at the site. This is a day-use stop, not a campsite. The water can be shallow at the jetty end, so do not dive from the wharf.

A lake shaped by iceAt around 9 km², Māpōurika is the largest lake in Westland Tai Poutini National Park.

At around 9 km², Māpōurika is the largest lake in Westland Tai Poutini National Park. It is a kettle lake, formed roughly 14,000 years ago when a large block of ice was left behind as Franz Josef Glacier retreated. Tannins darken the water; when the surface is calm, it can mirror the surrounding rainforest and mountains.

Look for kāmanaThe threatened kāmana, or crested grebe, lives on the lake.

The threatened kāmana, or crested grebe, lives on the lake. Scan the open water from the wharf, but treat a sighting as a bonus rather than a sure thing.

Make the most of the viewThe wharf gives a useful foreground for a photo across the lake.

The wharf gives a useful foreground for a photo across the lake. Sunset is a classic time to try it, and still water is what brings out the reflections. Sandflies are a recurring nuisance here, so repellent helps if you plan to linger.
