Park at the Gillespies Beach car park at the road end near the campsite; it’s about 21 km from Fox Glacier township via Cook Flat Road and Gillespies Beach Road. Note: roughly half the road is narrow, unsealed, and not suitable for towing vehicles.
Rapid West Coast weather shifts and heavy rain are common; check forecasts and track conditions first. Expect surf and wind on the beach, cobbly footing, and sandflies. Historic relics are fragile—don’t climb. If you detour toward Galway Beach, give seals plenty of space and never try to pass through a haul‑out; return via the track.

This is the scenic heart of the Gillespies Beach walks: a coastal ramble to Gillespies Lagoon, then a historic climb over an ancient glacier moraine into a miners’ tunnel and a viewpoint above the surf. It’s an out-and-back of 3.6 km (about 2.2 miles) total, typically taking around 1 hour 40 minutes return. Short, varied, and surprisingly atmospheric.
Route Snapshot
From the Gillespies Beach car park, follow the Miners Tunnel Track past old gold‑mining relics, reach the beach, and walk north to Gillespies Lagoon. A bridge sits roughly five minutes inland from the shore to cross the lagoon. Beyond, the track follows a former gold miners’ pack route, climbs the moraine, then enters the historic tunnel to a viewpoint above the beach. There’s no beach access from that viewpoint; you’ll return the same way.
Why Go
On a clear day you can score broad views, with the coastal sweep and, at times, the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana showing off. The mix—beach, lagoon, forested moraine, and a tunnel—packs a lot into a short distance. If you’re already here for the heritage walks, this is the natural “main event.”
Terrain and Feel
Expect cobbly beach sections, gorse‑fringed tailings near the start, a formed track with some ups and downs over the moraine, and the short tunnel section near the turnaround. The distance is modest, but the underfoot mix can make it feel a touch slower than it looks on paper.

Clear weather is the difference between moody and magic here. West Coast conditions change fast, so check the latest forecast and track updates at the local visitor centre before you go. Pack a rain layer and insect repellent—sandflies are a thing year‑round.

Historic remains are fragile—look, don’t climb. If you’re tempted to explore further, several short walks leave the same car park: Miners Cemetery (270 m, ~5 min), Suction Dredge Loop (400 m, ~15 min), and Bucket Dredge (1.6 km, ~30 min). A longer alternative is the Galway Beach Tramping Track (6.8 km, ~3 hr 30 min return) through forest to a remote beach; in winter there’s a seal haul‑out there—give them space and never try to walk through the colony to reach the lagoon; return via the track.
