From the Gillespies Beach car park, follow the Miners Tunnel Track past old gold‑mining relics, reach the beach, and walk north to Gillespies Lagoon. A bridge sits roughly five minutes inland from the shore to cross the lagoon. Beyond, the track follows a former gold miners’ pack route, climbs the moraine, then enters the historic tunnel to a viewpoint above the beach. There’s no beach access from that viewpoint; you’ll return the same way.

On a clear day you can score broad views, with the coastal sweep and, at times, the Southern Alps/Kā Tiritiri o te Moana showing off. The mix—beach, lagoon, forested moraine, and a tunnel—packs a lot into a short distance. If you’re already here for the heritage walks, this is the natural “main event.”

Historic remains are fragile—look, don’t climb. If you’re tempted to explore further, several short walks leave the same car park: Miners Cemetery (270 m, ~5 min), Suction Dredge Loop (400 m, ~15 min), and Bucket Dredge (1.6 km, ~30 min). A longer alternative is the Galway Beach Tramping Track (6.8 km, ~3 hr 30 min return) through forest to a remote beach; in winter there’s a seal haul‑out there—give them space and never try to walk through the colony to reach the lagoon; return via the track.
