Overview
Small, simple, and spectacularly placed, Gillespies Beach Campsite sits right behind a shingle beach with driftwood and, on a clear day, views to the Southern Alps. It’s a classic DOC spot: basic facilities, big scenery, and peace once the day‑trippers leave.
Setting & Highlights
Walk a few minutes from your tent to the surf for fiery West Coast sunsets. Short tracks from the campground wander past old gold‑mining relics (including historic dredges) and out to Galway Beach. In winter, a fur seal haul‑out can be seen near Galway—keep your distance and don’t disturb them.
Facilities & How It Works
This is a “Standard” DOC campground with about eight non‑powered sites, long‑drop toilets, a basic cooking shelter, sinks for dishes, and a tap (water is untreated—boil or treat before drinking). No fires are permitted. Bookings are required year‑round; phone/in‑person bookings add a service fee and aren’t guaranteed without space. Seasonal pricing applies: Feb 9–Dec 25 adults NZ$18/children NZ$9; Dec 26–Feb 8 adults NZ$20/children NZ$10; infants are free. DOC Campsite Passes are accepted, but you still need to book online.
Getting There
From Fox Glacier/Weheka it’s about 21 km via Cook Flat Road. More than half the drive is on a narrow gravel road—take it slow. Official guidance says it’s not suitable for campervans or caravans.
Wildlife Notes
You’ll likely hear (and sometimes see) kekeno/New Zealand fur seals along this coast, especially in winter near the Galway haul‑out. Give them plenty of space, keep food secured (possums roam at night), and enjoy the birdlife along the dunes.
What To Expect Day‑to‑Day
Space is tight when full, and it commonly fills before sunset during settled weather. Mobile signal can be patchy. Come self‑sufficient: repellent for sandflies, layers for changeable weather, and a stove for the shelter.
Best Time to Visit
- Sunsets are the main show—arrive mid‑afternoon to nab a site and enjoy golden hour on the beach.
- Clear mornings often bring your best chances for Alps views before clouds build.
- Peak season (late December–early February) is busiest; weekdays the rest of the year are quieter.
