An easy shared-use track that follows the south bank of the Fox River through ancient podocarp rainforest and across old glacial moraines. It’s a 6.4 km return (about 4.0 miles) with gentle grades and roughly ±100 m of elevation change. Expect peaceful forest walking and broad valley views rather than a close-up glacier encounter—the signed viewpoints are hundreds of metres from the ice.
Route in a Nutshell
From the trailhead it’s about 40 minutes on foot to the first glacier viewpoint. The track then continues to an old car park—the turnaround point for cyclists. From there, walkers descend around 10 minutes through rainforest to the main viewpoint of Fox Glacier/Te Moeka o Tuawe. Do not go past the barriers or signed viewpoint due to extreme flood hazards.
What Stands Out
This valley tells a slow geologic story: the forest changes as you cross moraines of different ages, a living timeline of the glacier’s retreats and advances. It’s also a calm, family-friendly outing, and the partial bike access makes it one of the more approachable glacier-view tracks on the coast.
Access and Facilities
From Fox Glacier/Weheka township, drive 2 km south, cross the Fox River Bridge, and park in the car park on the left. There are no toilets on the track; use facilities in town before you go.
Safety and Rules
Weather here flips fast—treat it like an alpine environment. River surges from icefall events and heavy downpours can cause flooding. Obey all closures and barriers; the track can be shut without notice for rockfall or high water. Bikes are allowed only as far as the old car park; continue on foot beyond that point. Drones require permission from the Department of Conservation, and dogs are not permitted. The glacier is culturally significant to Māori as the moeka (final resting place) of the ancestor Tuawe—respect signage and stay on the marked track.
Best Time to Hike
There isn’t one perfect time; conditions shift quickly. Go when the forecast is settled, and always check the local glacier access update before you commit. If clear views are a priority, be ready to adjust plans around weather and closures.
