This is the signed parking area for White Sands’ ranger-led Sunset Stroll, a guided walk of about half a mile over the gypsum dunes. The ranger sets a leisurely, easy-to-moderate pace, stopping to talk about the dunes, plants, and animals; the walk takes 45 minutes to an hour and ends at sunset. Go for the chance to get into the dunes with a ranger explaining what you’re crossing, not just to watch the sky change.

What the walk is likeThis is not a paved or marked trail.

This is not a paved or marked trail. You leave the road and walk through sand, climbing several moderate dunes. There are no seats for the program, though visitors can sit on the ground during ranger stops. The park recommends bringing a liter of water per person and a jacket for the temperature drop after sunset.

How the white dunes formedThe gypsum deposits began in Permian seas roughly 280–250 million years ago.

The gypsum deposits began in Permian seas roughly 280–250 million years ago. Ancient Lake Otero once covered about 1,600 square miles of the basin; as it dried, it left selenite crystals behind. Wind broke and polished those crystals into white grains, building dunes that move northeast. The Tularosa Basin itself formed through faulting between the San Andres and Sacramento Mountains about 30 million years ago.

Stay for the viewThe stroll ends with a broad sunset view over the mountains beyond the pale dunes.

The stroll ends with a broad sunset view over the mountains beyond the pale dunes. For a photo, keep a strip of dune ridge in the foreground with the mountains above it; that gives the scene a sense of place instead of recording only a bright sky.

Before you goThe program is free, but park entrance fees apply.

The program is free, but park entrance fees apply. There are no toilets at the meeting area or along the route. The sandy walk is not wheelchair or stroller accessible; contact park staff ahead of time to ask about possible accommodations.
