More about Five Mile Beach Camping Area

A remote coastal campFive Mile Beach Camping Area is a backcountry overnight campsite in Wilsons Promontory’s…

Five Mile Beach Camping Area is a backcountry overnight campsite in Wilsons Promontory’s northern wilderness, tucked among trees beside the tidal inlet of Miranda Creek. The beach is part of the stay: the final stretch to camp follows its northern sand, which opens into a broad sweep at low tide. This is for an overnight hike, not a drive-up beach visit. From Five Mile Road Carpark, the walk is about 18 km one way.

What to expectThe camp has no facilities.

The camp has no facilities. Its appeal is the combination of open beach and a sheltered creek-side camp, but the route in is long and exposed before it reaches the sand. Accounts describe a freshwater source across the estuary, though access and flow change with tide and conditions; don’t rely on the estuary itself for drinking water. Plan your water before leaving.

Plan for a wilderness stayAn overnight hiking permit requires Parks Victoria’s Hiker Self Assessment Form.

An overnight hiking permit requires Parks Victoria’s Hiker Self Assessment Form. Parts of the northern route are only marked with flagging tape or are undefined, so map-and-compass navigation is required. Groups are limited to six people and stays to two consecutive nights. There is no road access to the campsite. The 18 km approach and lack of facilities make this a better pick for prepared backpackers than anyone trying to squeeze in a quick stop.
