Plan around the access

Telegraph Saddle Carpark is closed during summer school holidays, at Easter and on weekends from November through April. During those periods a shuttle runs from Tidal River, stopping at the visitor-centre carpark, Overnight Hikers Carpark and Telegraph Saddle; check current shuttle arrangements before setting out. Toilets are available at Tidal River. Take your own water and a snack for the climb, and keep clear of the summit cliffs. Pets aren’t allowed in the national park; assistance dogs have separate entry requirements.

Mount Oberon is a 558 m coastal summit in Wilsons Promontory National Park, reached by an out-and-back walk from Telegraph Saddle. Its rocky top looks out over Tidal River and the coast, making it one of the park’s signature viewpoints. This is an outing on foot, not a stop you can add from the car: allow about two hours for 6.8 km return, and expect a steep finish. It pays off best when the summit is clear. Even in summer it can be cool, windy and clouded, so the view can disappear; bring a warm layer and be ready for the weather to feel different up high.

The route starts at Telegraph Saddle Carpark and climbs on a wide management track, mostly compacted gravel. Timber benches along the way give you places to pause, but the climb keeps going. Near the top, the track gives way to steep steps and granite boulders. That last section changes the feel of the walk: slow down, especially when the rocks are wet, and take care around the unprotected edges once you reach the summit. The return follows the same route, so save some energy for the descent. Give yourself time to rest and look around rather than turning straight back.

From the summit, the view runs across Tidal River campground and Norman Beach, around bays including Little Oberon, Norman, Leonard, Picnic and Whisky, and out to islands scattered along the coast. The beaches and bays are separated by dark headlands, so their curves read as a chain along the shoreline. Follow that line toward the offshore islands, then turn inland to the rolling, forested peaks; look south toward the southern tip of mainland Australia. It’s a useful place to understand how the park’s beaches, headlands and ridges fit together, not just a single ocean-facing lookout. For a photo, take in the wide sweep of bays and islands with the summit granite in the foreground, then turn around for the inland view too. A later walk can catch sunset, but visibility depends on the weather and you’ll need a torch if you descend after dark.
