Plan your stop

Before you go

Keep access and water in mind

The carpark has toilets, and parking serves the beach access. Whisky Bay is unpatrolled. Official safety warnings list strong currents, submerged obstacles, rough surf and slippery rocks; sheltered describes the shape of the bay, not safe swimming conditions. Don't read a calm-looking patch of water as a sign that there are no hazards. Dogs are not allowed in the park, except assistance dogs under the park's entry requirements. If a dog is part of your trip, arrange somewhere else for it; assistance dogs follow park entry requirements. Check official park conditions before setting out, and leave time for the walk back across the dunes.

More about Whisky Bay

Whisky Bay is a west-facing beach on the western side of Wilsons Promontory National Park, tucked between granite headlands. Sand, rounded boulders and a small rocky island offshore give it a close, framed feel: the shoreline is the main event, not a long approach or an overlook from the road. If you want a beach stop that doesn't require a serious hike, this is an easy one to choose; the path from the carpark is only 400 m one way. Walk down rather than judging it from the parking area, then spend time looking both along the curve of the bay and back toward the headlands. The granite shapes are distinctive of the Prom, so this is a clear sample of the coast's rock-and-sand scenery.

From Whisky Bay Carpark, the access track follows a creek line and then crosses sand dunes before reaching the beach. It's Grade 2 and an easy 400 m each way, so count the return walk too; exploring the sand is extra. The approach is a short natural walk rather than a roadside viewpoint, with the creek and dunes giving you a change of setting before the water opens up. At the bay, you can carry on to nearby Picnic Beach or take the Three Bays Track toward Tidal River. The full Three Bays Walk links Squeaky Beach, Picnic Bay and Whisky Bay over 6.2 km one way, Grade 3, roughly two hours, with short steep sections and beach walking. Treat that as a separate hike: arrange a car shuttle or be ready to retrace your steps.

Read the shorelineGranite boulders on both sides close around the sand, while rocks at the water's edge break up…

Granite boulders on both sides close around the sand, while rocks at the water's edge break up the view; look along the shore instead of only out to sea. For a photo, use one of the dark foreground boulders as a frame and keep enough water in the middle to show how the bay opens past it. From the sand you can fit rock, beach and sea together without climbing onto slippery surfaces. The beach faces west, making it a natural place to linger toward sunset if that fits your day. Take a moment to notice how the headlands shape the view from different points along the beach; the changing outlines are what make this stop more than a quick look at open water.
