Ancient Foundations is a small geology pullout on SD 87, where a wayside exhibit sits beside an exposed pegmatite outcrop. I'd stop if you enjoy looking closely at rock; the draw is a quick read-and-look, not a hike. The parking area serves cars and buses or RVs.
Look for gray quartz, pink feldspar with shiny flat faces, and long black tourmaline crystals. Their size is a clue: this coarse-grained rock cooled very slowly deep underground. Leave the crystals in place; taking rocks from the park is prohibited.
The pegmatite is about 1.7 billion years old. It intruded into schist that formed roughly 2 billion years ago, so this stop shows younger rock cutting through older rock. Tougher pegmatite helps form ridges and plateaus, while weaker schist wears into valleys. Both kinds of rock are visible along SD 87.
