“You're approaching Wind Cave and its visitor center. The reason to go underground is boxwork: thin blades of calcite that stick out from the walls and ceilings in a honeycomb pattern.”

Prairie Vista is an easy loop of about one mile round trip from the Visitor Center. It crosses open prairie, passes Wind Cave’s Natural Entrance, and follows interpretive waysides. The picnic area about 0.15 mile north is another place to start.

The short walk gives you both the cave’s entrance area and a look over the surrounding grassland. The view is open, with low prairie hills and scattered pines; the waysides add a reason to slow down before the trail turns back toward the Visitor Center.

Two short climbsThis is easy overall, but it isn’t flat the whole way.

This is easy overall, but it isn’t flat the whole way. Expect two steeper pitches, a flatter stretch across the upper prairie, then a descent toward the Visitor Center. Allow about 35 minutes if you pause at the waysides.

Before you goLeashed pets are allowed.

Leashed pets are allowed. There’s no drinking water on the trail and little shade across the open prairie. Summer afternoons can be hot, and strong thunderstorms with hail are common. The trail’s exact tread and wheelchair accessibility aren’t established, so don’t assume the nearby paved cave-entrance approach represents the whole loop.
