East Bison Flats Trail

East Bison Flats is an out-and-back from Gobbler Pass on US 385 across rolling prairie to the Wind Cave Canyon connection. The published trail distance is 3.7 miles one way, so plan for 7.4 miles back to the car; the mapped tread and a firsthand GPS track measure closer to 3.3 miles each way. Use the higher figure for planning. Allow about four hours. The walk is moderately strenuous, with a steep drop into Gobbler Canyon and a hard climb back out. There is little shade and no drinking water, and pets are not allowed on this trail. Carry the water you need for the whole outing.

The trail starts at a high point just north of the park’s south entrance, climbs briefly, then rolls across grassland before dropping sharply into Gobbler Canyon. The canyon bottom is the low point. A steep climb out includes a switchback; the grade eases after roughly a fifth of a mile, then the route continues over open ground. On the return, you reverse this sequence and finish with the climb back toward Gobbler Pass.

After the canyon, the path crosses open grassland with little shelter from sun or wind. Some route markers have been knocked down by bison rubbing against them, so keep an eye on the next marker and bring a map for the open stretch. At the north end, the route descends more gently to a connector leading toward Wind Cave Canyon Trail. Reaching the canyon trailhead adds about half a mile; that connector is outside the East Bison Flats distance.

The reward is a broad look over prairie, Buffalo Gap, and the Black Hills. From the rise above Gobbler Canyon, turn back for a view across the canyon and the southern trailhead; farther north, the grassland opens around scattered pines and low ridges. For a photo, leave some of the tawny grass in the foreground and frame the gap between the ridges. Bison may be nearby, and they are unpredictable and dangerous; give them plenty of room.
