Wind Cave Visitor Center

Wind Cave Visitor Center is the park’s information and interpretation hub, set on the prairie just west of US 385. It’s also where every ranger-led cave tour begins. If going underground is your priority, book ahead when you can: about half of tour tickets are held for same-day sale at the center, and those often sell out soon after opening. If you miss out, the exhibits and film still make this a useful introduction, but they’re not a substitute for seeing the cave.

The center is 11 miles north of Hot Springs and 22 miles south of Custer, about half a mile west of US 385. Follow the signed turn into the park; GPS can send drivers into the backcountry. The building is wheelchair accessible and has accessible restrooms. Some cave tours need advance accessibility arrangements, so ask at the desk early.

The upper exhibit room connects Indigenous uses of bison with prairie management. The cave-focused room below covers how the cave formed, its features, and park history. The auditorium film, One Park, Two Worlds, adds a quick overview of what lies above and below ground.

Wind Cave is also important in Lakota tradition. Its Lakota name, Oniya Oshoka, is tied to a story of emergence. That gives the cave another layer beyond its geology and connects it to the wider history of the Black Hills.

Pick up park maps, Junior Ranger materials, and backcountry permits at the information desk; passes are available here too. The on-site store focuses on books, maps, educational materials, and gifts such as patches and pins.
