Fairy Falls

Overview

Fairy Falls is a graceful 200-foot waterfall tucked behind Midway Geyser Basin. The hike is popular because it’s low effort for a big payoff, and you can tack on the Grand Prismatic Overlook for that elevated rainbow view, or continue to Imperial Geyser if you’re feeling ambitious.

Route Options

• Core hike: About 1.6 miles one way to the falls on a mostly flat, wide path. Plan roughly 1.5 hours round-trip if you’re moving steadily and not lingering too long at the falls.
• Add Imperial Geyser: Continue 0.6 miles beyond the falls to reach Spray and Imperial geysers, adding 1.2 miles total.
• Grand Prismatic Overlook: From the same trail corridor, a short, steady climb leads to the overlook for a bird’s-eye view of the hot spring before or after you visit the falls.

What You’ll See

Expect lodgepole forest, open stretches along old road grades, and thermal areas in the broader landscape. The waterfall itself is tall and photogenic, dropping in a fine, lacy sheet—easy to shoot from the base. If you extend to Imperial, you’ll encounter a lively backcountry geyser area that occasionally puts on a show.

Wildlife and Safety

You’re in bear country—carry bear spray, stay alert, hike in groups, and keep distance from all wildlife. Thermal features are scattered around this region; stay on marked trails only. The path is exposed in places, so bring sun protection and water.

Best Time to Visit

For the Grand Prismatic colors, aim for mid-to-late afternoon when sun and reduced steam usually pop the hues, but dodge peak-parking chaos by going early or after 5 pm. The area is typically closed until Memorial Day for bear management, with August and September offering the driest footing and fewest bugs. Expect snow/ice early season and dust or mud depending on weather.

Logistics

Trailhead parking sits just south of Midway Geyser Basin and is often easier than the Midway lot, but it still fills at midday. Services are limited—no potable water at the trailhead and typically no restrooms right there, so plan ahead at major basins or visitor areas. Dogs aren’t allowed on the trail. If parking is jammed, wait for a spot rather than walking busy roadside sections.
