Overview

Grand Geyser is the showstopper of the Upper Geyser Basin—a classic fountain geyser and the tallest predictable geyser. When it goes, it throws dramatic, pulsing bursts that can reach around 200 feet and typically last 9–12 minutes in one to four big acts. It’s a more intimate, closer-to-the-action experience than the Old Faithful viewpoint.

How It Erupts

Grand is part of the Grand Group with Turban and Vent geysers. Turban erupts in roughly 20‑minute cycles, and Grand usually fires just before or within a minute of the start of one of Turban’s cycles. After Grand winds down, Vent and Turban often keep sputtering away for a while. Intervals between Grand’s major shows are on the order of several hours (often about 6–7 hours), with the pool emptying after an eruption and taking around five hours to refill.

How to Catch It

Start at the Old Faithful area, then follow paved paths and boardwalks along the Firehole River to Grand.
Check the day’s prediction window at the Old Faithful Visitor Center. Think of it as a window, not a set time—patience pays off.
Watch Turban: when a new Turban cycle starts, be ready—Grand often joins within a minute. If it doesn’t, you’ve likely got ~15–20 minutes until the next chance.
Pick a spot upwind to avoid steam and spray; if the wind shifts, you’ll get soaked. Benches are available near the viewing area.

Why It’s Special

Grand’s combination of height, multiple bursts, and relatively frequent predictability makes it one of the most satisfying geyser shows you can plan around. Many visitors walk away saying it outshines Old Faithful’s steadier plume.

Logistics

Park at the Old Faithful lots and use the well-signed paths/boardwalks into the Upper Geyser Basin to reach Grand. Services (restrooms, food, and a full visitor center) are clustered at Old Faithful—top off there before you stroll out.

Safety & Etiquette

Stay on boardwalks around all hydrothermal features—the ground is thin and the water is scalding. Give wildlife space, and keep tripods and packs clear of the walkway when crowds gather.

Best Time to Visit

Plan your visit around the posted prediction window and arrive early to snag seating and a good angle. For photos, choose an upwind vantage to keep steam off your view. Expect a crowd to gather as the pool fills and Turban cycles, but it’s typically smaller and closer than at Old Faithful.
