Tucked along the Firehole River in the Upper Geyser Basin, Riverside is a classic cone geyser that puts on an elegant, arcing show directly over the water. It’s widely considered one of the most picturesque and reliable geysers, and it’s usually far less crowded than Old Faithful—worth the scenic stroll.

What You’ll See

Eruptions reach about 75 feet and typically last around 20 minutes, often in a graceful arc that can split into two plumes. On sunny days, the spray frequently throws rainbows—one reason this spot is a favorite for photographers.

Timing and Predictability

Riverside’s average interval is about 6 hours 30 minutes (give or take ~30 minutes). Daily prediction windows are posted in the Old Faithful area and through official park channels. A handy cue: pre‑eruption overflow from the cone into the river often signals that showtime is near.

Getting There & Facilities

Reach Riverside via the Upper Geyser Basin boardwalk west of Old Faithful, along the loop toward Morning Glory Pool. There’s no on‑site parking; use the Old Faithful lots and enjoy the easy walk past other thermal features. The viewing area has benches, and there’s a vault toilet close by. Don’t expect picnic tables in the thermal basin.

Best Time to Visit

For photography, aim for mid‑to‑late afternoon on sunny days when the sun is behind you relative to the spray—prime rainbow conditions. Plan to be in place 20–40 minutes before the posted window; Riverside is predictable, but you still need to be present when the window opens.
