Hamilton Falls

Overview

A short, shaded walk delivers you to a tucked-away waterfall pouring through a narrow canyon above Emerald Lake. Hamilton Falls won’t blow your mind like Takakkaw, but it’s a lovely, low-effort detour when you’re already at the lake—quiet, mossy, and far less busy than the park’s headliners.

The Walk

Start from the Emerald Lake parking lot and follow signs for Hamilton Falls (not the main lake loop). The path climbs gently along Hamilton Creek through dense forest for roughly 0.8–1 mile round-trip. Expect the lower falls view first; a fenced viewpoint offers a safe perch, and it’s best to respect barriers—there are drop-offs and slick rock near the gorge.

What You’ll See

You’re mostly in trees with the creek beside you, then the cascade appears in a tight slot. The upper sections stay largely out of sight, which adds to the hidden feel but limits the grand photo angle. On clear days you’ll catch glimpses of Emerald Lake and surrounding peaks near the trailhead.

Wildlife

This forested corridor is a good place for small critters and birds (think chipmunks, jays, nutcrackers). As with most of Yoho, bears can roam the area—carry bear spray and give wildlife space.

Know Before You Go

• Drones are illegal in Canada’s national parks
• Fishing and watercraft are prohibited here
• Trail signage exists but isn’t lavish; stay on the main path

Best Time to Visit

• Late spring through fall (April–November) for easy hiking and flowing water
• Winter for frozen-falls scenery (bring traction; it can be icy)
• Aim for early morning or late afternoon to sidestep peak Emerald Lake parking pressure, especially June–September
