Wapta Falls

Start at the Wapta Falls Day-use area on the south side of Highway 1, 26 km west of Field and 32 km east of Golden. Access is eastbound only. If you are travelling west, continue 5.5 km to the Beaverfoot exit at the park boundary, then return east on Highway 1. Map directions can send visitors to the separate Wapta Recreation Site on Beaverfoot Forest Service Road, so use the highway day-use approach. The 2 km Wapta Falls Road to the parking area closes from late October to late May.

Cross the highway from the parking area to the trailhead, then follow the forest route toward the river. It is 2.2 km each way, with an official return estimate of 1.5 hours. Watch for roots. The last descent is noticeably steeper than the approach, and the way back climbs; stay on the marked route down to the river. There is no maintained trail to the base of the falls.

At the viewpoint, leave enough room in the frame to show the full width of the falls, with some river below for scale. A tight crop loses what makes Wapta distinctive: the Kicking Horse spreading across the ledge in a broad sheet of water. The view from the river is close enough to feel the force without scrambling toward the base.

The river’s name comes from an 1858 mishap involving explorer and physician James Hector: while travelling with the Palliser Expedition, he was kicked and stunned by his packhorse. It is a story attached to the river running through this part of Yoho, and a striking name to have in mind as it thunders over the falls.
