Emerald Pool

Overview

Emerald Pool is a small, calm-looking basin of the Merced River perched just upstream from the brink of Vernal Fall, fed by the smooth granite chute known as the Silver Apron. Its deep green tint comes from algae on the rock bottom. It’s a pretty, quick detour once you’ve topped out at Vernal—more of a scenic pause than a destination.

Getting There

Reach it on the Mist Trail from Happy Isles in eastern Yosemite Valley. It’s encountered shortly after you crest the top of Vernal Fall. Expect a steep climb with sprayed, wet steps near the waterfall; many hikers continue from here toward Nevada Fall.

Safety First (Seriously)

Do not enter the water—no wading, no swimming, no "just a quick dip." The current can be deceptively strong, and this area has a history of tragic accidents. Sliding the Silver Apron is also prohibited; submerged rocks and swift water make it extremely dangerous. Obey all barriers and signs.

• Common valley wildlife like birds, deer, and cheeky squirrels near the rest areas—give them space and never feed them.

Season by Season

• Spring to early summer: Peak runoff supercharges the river; the “pool” can look more like fast-moving water. Steps are soaked with mist—extra caution required.
• Summer: Flows ease and the pool appears calmer, but the no-entry rule still applies.
• Fall and winter: Drier or icy conditions depending on weather; some facilities may close in the off-season.

Amenities and Logistics

There’s no dedicated parking for Emerald Pool. Park or shuttle to Happy Isles and start up the Mist Trail. Restrooms and drinking water are available seasonally near the Vernal Fall Footbridge lower on the route; additional toilets are near the top of Vernal Fall and farther along the corridor. Carry plenty of water if you’re continuing to Nevada Fall.

Geology Snapshot

The pool sits in Yosemite’s hard granitic bedrock—part of the Sierra Nevada batholith uplifted over millions of years. Glaciers during the Pleistocene sculpted and polished this landscape, shaping river basins, waterfalls, and smooth granite slabs like the Silver Apron.

Best Time to Visit

Start early to beat crowds and climb in cooler temps. Midday is busiest on the Mist Trail. For photos, stick to established viewpoints near the top of Vernal and along the trail; avoid wet edges and never step over railings.

Worth it if you’re already hiking Vernal/Nevada—take a short breather, admire the color, then keep moving. Treat the water with total respect.
