Inspiration Point

Overview

Inspiration Point is the low-key, high-reward way to see the classic lineup—El Capitan, Half Dome, and Bridalveil Fall—without the scrum at Tunnel View. It’s a short but punchy hike that trades tour-bus crowds for forested solitude and an elevated angle on Yosemite Valley.

The Hike

• Distance/elevation: roughly 2.5–2.6 miles round trip with about 1,000 feet of gain. Expect 1.5–2 hours.
• Route: Start behind Tunnel View on Highway 41 and follow the Pohono Trail. The first half-mile is steep and rocky, then it eases as you wind through oak, fir, pine, and cedar.
• Trail notes: Stay on the main path—there’s poison oak in the lower sections. Footing can be loose in places.

Views and Photography

The historic granite shelf at Inspiration Point has trees framing parts of the vista. For the cleanest window, carefully descend about 15 feet to a lower granite slab. Light is best at sunrise or late afternoon toward sunset. Snow-dusted peaks or a clearing storm can turn the scene into a showstopper.

History

Before Wawona Tunnel existed, this was the roadside viewpoint for arriving travelers. The hike crosses the old stagecoach road to the Valley, later damaged by a 1937 flood. Nearby, Old Inspiration Point is associated with early parties who first gazed into Yosemite—hence the name.

Wildlife

Deer and birds are common; quail and even black bears are possible. Give wildlife space and use the food storage lockers at the trailhead—this is bear country.

Logistics and Amenities

• Trailhead/parking: Park at Tunnel View; the trail starts on the uphill side of the lot. It’s a popular area—arrive early.
• Facilities: No services on the trail. The nearest restrooms are at Bridalveil Fall, about 1.5 miles down Highway 41. Snacks are in Yosemite Village, roughly 7 miles away.
• Cell service: Often none—plan meetups ahead of time.

Extensions

From the Old Stagecoach Road crossing, a short detour reaches Artist Point, which some find more open for less effort. Continuing on the Pohono Trail leads past Old Inspiration Point and, for ambitious hikers, all the way toward Glacier Point.

Best Time to Visit

• Time of day: Sunrise for soft front light; late afternoon to sunset for drama and depth.
• Season/weather: Any time roads are open works. Wawona Road to Tunnel View is typically open year‑round; check current conditions and any peak‑hours reservation requirements on the NPS site during busy periods.

Expectations Check

If you’re chasing the postcard shot with zero sweat, Tunnel View itself is easier. If you want a quick, heart‑pumping climb to a quieter vantage with room to breathe, Inspiration Point delivers.
