Overview

Old Inspiration Point sits above Tunnel View and delivers the classic Yosemite Valley scene without the crowd crush. Expect a broad granite perch and big perspectives both up- and downstream over the Merced. It’s a rewarding spot for people who want a little effort and a lot of quiet.

The Hike

Start from the uphill side of Tunnel View on Wawona Road. The trail climbs steeply right away over rocky tread, crossing remnants of the old stagecoach/Wawona Road partway up. Most reports peg it at about 2.5–2.6 miles round trip with roughly 1,000 feet of gain—short, but stout. There’s little-to-no cell service. Signage is sparse up high, and the final spur to the old point is unmarked and can be easy to miss.

Views and How to Find the Best Spot

At the top, the official “point” isn’t labeled. Trees partially frame some angles, but if you drop about 15 feet down to a lower granite platform, you’ll find the unobstructed money shot: El Capitan, Bridalveil Fall, and Half Dome lined up. Many hikers rate this vista superior to the newer Inspiration Point.

History

This is the viewpoint tied to some of the earliest written accounts of Yosemite Valley. In 1851, Dr. Lafayette Bunnell described his first sight of the valley from what’s now called Old Inspiration Point—near today’s Tunnel View.

Wildlife and Conditions

Expect birds, quail, and deer; the occasional bear is reported in the broader area. Bugs can be pesky in season. Poison oak shows up along the lower trail near the parking area—stay on the path and mind your footing on the rocky sections.

Logistics

There are no services at the viewpoint: no water, no toilets, no trash cans. Park at Tunnel View and pack out everything. You’ll leave the crowds behind almost immediately after starting uphill.

Best Time to Visit

Sunrise or late afternoon brings the best light and fewer people. A popular play is to watch sunrise at Tunnel View, then head up while it’s cool. Weekdays are quieter, and clarity after storms or in winter/spring can be spectacular.
