Trail guide
This is a 19.2-mile out-and-back from the Chilnualna Falls Trailhead in Wawona to Crescent Lake, climbing past Chilnualna Falls and continuing east into the high country. The route follows about 9.7 miles of trail each way and gains roughly 4,700 feet. This is a very long, strenuous day hike; allow about 12 to 14 hours with breaks, or plan a permitted overnight. The first 4.6 miles climb about 2,300 feet to the falls, and the climb continues most of the way to the lake at about 8,300 feet.
The path climbs from Wawona through black oak, ponderosa pine, and incense cedar, then switchbacks up Turner Ridge. At an early fork, take the hikers' right branch for small cascades; it rejoins the horse route. A granite stairway and creek crossings break up the steady climb, while the trees screen most views until Winona Dome appears near the upper falls. Chilnualna Falls drops in several tiers, ending at a broad granite shelf above the highest cataract. The upper fall is mostly seen from the side and at a distance. Stay back from slick streamside granite, especially when water is high.
Keep heading east at the forks toward Royal Arch and Johnson Lakes. Signs help, but carry a topographic map: snow can cover the tread at higher elevations, and the route crosses streams several times before it contours around Buena Vista Peak to Crescent Lake. The lake is the reward for the long climb, not a quick extension past the falls. Spring runoff can make crossings fast, and early-season snow can make the path difficult to follow.
Start at the Chilnualna Falls Trailhead in Wawona; the dirt lot holds about 20 cars and has an outhouse. If Crescent Lake is too much for the day, the out-and-back to Chilnualna Falls is about 8.4 miles and still involves a steep climb. Day hikers do not need a wilderness permit, but an overnight stay requires one year-round. Ordinary pets are not allowed on park trails or in wilderness; trained service dogs are permitted where visitors may go.
