Bridal Veil Falls Lookout

Bridal Veil Falls Lookout is a small clearing on Arthur's Pass Walking Track, about 20 minutes on foot from Punchbowl car park. A picnic table sits among mountain beech and Dracophyllum, with views across the falls to the surrounding peaks and Arthur's Pass village. I'd make the walk for that whole valley scene; the waterfall is distant and partly screened by trees, so this isn't a close-up stop.

The full Arthur's Pass Walking Track is 6.8 km return and takes about 2 hours 40 minutes at an easy-to-intermediate grade. The lookout is a short stop along it. From the Bealey Chasm and Jacks Hut end, the route drops by a long flight of steps into Bridal Veil Creek gorge, then climbs back up to the lookout spur. Keep to the track: the main highway isn't safe to walk, and dogs aren't allowed.

The falls are partly hidden by trees across the gorge, so the surrounding peaks and village are part of the view. Morning sun sits behind the water and can make it harder to see; later daylight is usually better for viewing and photos.

In spring and summer, watch for Dracophyllum's vivid red leaves along the track. They're a striking change from the mountain beech forest around them.
