Door Trail

Door Trail is an out-and-back that starts on an accessible boardwalk through a break in the Badlands Wall, then continues on yellow posts across the eroded ground. Plan on about 0.8 miles round trip. It is an easy way to get close to the formations without taking on one of the park’s long hikes. The boardwalk-only visit is about 0.26 miles round trip and works well if you mainly want the view or need a firm, accessible surface.

From the shared Door and Window parking area, the 226-yard boardwalk passes through the break called the Door and ends at a broad view of the Badlands. If you continue, retrace a short stretch to the junction marked by yellow posts, then follow the markers across natural ground to the last marked post. Turn around there and retrace the route to the lot. The boardwalk is flat; the marked continuation has small rises and dips and no constructed tread. The park lists about 20 minutes for the full hike; allow 30 to 45 minutes if you want time at the overlook.

The Door is a natural opening in the Badlands Wall, and the view opens onto layered ridges, eroded gullies, and small canyons. The boardwalk overlook is the easiest place to take it in. For a photo, frame the opening in the wall with the formations beyond it; that shows both why this spot is called the Door and what it opens onto. The yellow-post section puts you down among the formations rather than looking at them from the rim.

The rough extension crosses uneven bedrock near unprotected drop-offs. Follow the yellow posts and turn back if you need the accessible surface or do not feel steady on irregular ground. The park warns that travel beyond the maintained boardwalk is at your own risk. Restrooms and a picnic shelter are at the trailhead. Pets are not allowed on park trails; trained service animals are permitted under the park’s rules.
