Ben Reifel Visitor Center

Ben Reifel Visitor Center is the main visitor center for Badlands National Park’s North Unit, at park headquarters. Make it your first stop if you want a map, a quick overview, or a ranger’s advice on which roads and hikes fit your day. Give it 15–60 minutes for the exhibits, film, and shop; stay longer if the fossil lab is open. The lab is seasonal, and the center’s daily hours change through the year, so check both before building a visit around them.

One of the center’s most unusual features is its working fossil-preparation lab. Paleontologists and interns identify fossil species, remove surrounding rock, prepare and catalogue specimens, and sometimes answer questions while they work. It’s a chance to see the careful work behind a fossil display, not just the finished bones. The lab usually operates in summer, but its schedule depends on staffing; treat it as a bonus rather than a guaranteed show.

Rangers provide maps and local orientation, and can answer questions about geology, wildlife, and park history. The museum displays and park film make a useful primer before you head out to the overlooks and trails. Visitors often use the center to plan their drive or hike choices, though it also works as a stop at the end of a park visit.

Ben Reifel was a Sicangu Lakota politician and Bureau of Indian Affairs official, born on the Rosebud Indian Reservation in 1906. He became the first Lakota person elected to Congress, serving from 1961 to 1971, and served in the Army, reaching lieutenant colonel. South Dakota named the center for him during its Year of Reconciliation, when the state also changed Columbus Day to Native American Day.

The low, flat-roofed center with tall windows is part of the park’s own history. Architect Cecil Doty and the firm Lucas, Craig, Whitwam designed it, and it was built in 1957–58 as a Mission 66-era facility.
