Guide
Cedar Pass Amphitheater is an open-air program venue on the north side of Cedar Pass Campground. Rows of backed benches face a tan stage building, with the eroded Badlands formations behind the seating. I would plan around a ranger program; this is most compelling as an evening stop, not a separate daytime attraction.
Astronomy rangers lead a tour of the night sky, pointing out stars, constellations, planets and satellites. Telescopes are available during these sessions to look at objects such as planets or the Moon. The telescope viewing makes the session more than a talk; visitors can look at objects such as planets or the Moon. Other ranger talks change topic; past subjects have included bison, bighorn sheep, fossils and park trivia.
Programs are seasonal, and the start time shifts with sunset. Check the current schedule at a visitor center before building your evening around one. A low-grade paved ramp connects the parking lot to the amphitheater, and the National Park Service says visitors of all abilities are welcome. The site lists a restroom and picnic table. Cedar Pass Lodge has the park's only restaurant for sit-down meals and snacks; it is a separate nearby stop, not food service at the amphitheater.
The bench rows sit below the eroded formations, which give the outdoor venue a distinct Badlands backdrop. If you take a photo, keep some seating in the foreground so the picture shows the amphitheater as well as the cliffs.
