Buffalo Nations Museum is a small museum in a distinctive log building in Banff town, focused on Indigenous cultures and histories of the Northern Plains and Canadian Rockies. It’s a good indoor change of pace from the mountain scenery; allow about 30–60 minutes for a focused visit. The collection is an introduction rather than a full-day deep dive, and some displays offer less context than you may want.

The museum’s displays follow seasonal bison movement and tipi camps, with travois, regalia, quillwork and hunting equipment among the things to notice. A decorated tipi, beadwork, dioramas and hands-on elements add to the visit. The objects are the main reason to stop, so take time to look closely instead of rushing through. There’s also a gift shop.

How the museum beganNorman Luxton’s collection became a long-running project in Banff.

Norman Luxton’s collection became a long-running project in Banff. The first room at the present site was built in 1953, followed by additions in 1955 and 1957 and an eastern room in 1960. The museum is now owned and operated by Buffalo Nations Cultural Society, giving the place a cultural and community context beyond its early collecting history.

The people and Nations behind its scopeThe museum presents First Nations cultures as living and changing, not only as history.

The museum presents First Nations cultures as living and changing, not only as history. Buffalo Nations Cultural Society includes members of Treaty 6 and Treaty 7 and Métis; the museum names Siksika, Piikani, Kainai, Tsuut’ina, Stoney Nakoda and Cree among the communities connected to its work.
