Why hike it

Looking for an easy, scenic hour near town? Marsh Loop circles a hot‑springs‑fed wetland right by the Cave and Basin National Historic Site. It’s flat, family‑friendly, and a genuine birding hotspot, with big Bow Valley views and constant chances to spot red‑winged blackbirds and other marsh dwellers.

The experience

This is a true loop (about 1.7 miles total) with minimal elevation change. The path mixes packed dirt and some boardwalk, crosses a few small bridges, and passes a fish‑viewing platform and a bird hide so you can linger without spooking wildlife. Expect reeds, steaming pools in cool weather, and panoramic looks toward Sulphur Mountain and the Bow Valley.

What to know before you go

It’s easy—but not pristine. Horses share sections of the route, so mud (and manure) are common, especially after rain. Wear waterproof footwear. Dogs are allowed on leash. The trail can be hiked year‑round, but winter brings icy patches and quieter wildlife. Spring through early fall is best for active birds and drier footing.

Best time to hike

May–September is prime for birdlife and drier conditions. Go early morning for your best wildlife sightings and softer light. Shoulder seasons (late April, October) can be muddier. In winter, expect snow/ice and fewer birds, though the loop usually remains accessible.

Logistics and add‑ons

Start right at Cave and Basin; the loop begins on the signed path just outside the site. A National Park pass is required. Want more mileage? Continue from the south end toward Sundance Canyon for a longer, still-accessible outing. If you’re short on time, pairing the loop with a visit to the Cave and Basin exhibits makes for an easy half day.

Is it for you?
