Bow Falls

Overview

Bow Falls is a wide, roaring block waterfall just below the Fairmont Banff Springs, where the Bow and Spray Rivers meet. It only drops about 9 meters, but the breadth and volume are the draw here—set in a valley carved by past glaciers with rocky cliffs and mountain views.

What You'll See

• Big, thundering cascades spread across the Bow River, with blue‑green water and photogenic angles from lower boardwalks and higher viewpoints.
• Classic looks toward the falls and the Banff Springs Hotel; Surprise Corner across the river offers another perspective.

Getting There & The Walk

• From town, follow the Bow Falls Trail (about 1.2 km from the Bow River Bridge; 20–25 minutes) along the river to the viewpoints. Expect a little elevation to reach the clifftop lookout.
• You can also bike or drive to the small car park at the base. Paths are well maintained, and there are picnic facilities right by the river.

Why It’s Not Just Another Waterfall

It’s the sheer width and proximity to town that make Bow Falls a classic quick stop. It even had a star turn in the 1953 film River of No Return.

Wildlife

This isn’t a prime wildlife spot due to the crowds, but the river corridor can turn up birds of prey (think eagles and osprey) and the occasional deer.

Best Time to Visit

• Early morning or late afternoon for softer light and fewer people; weekdays are quieter than weekends.
• Summer mid‑day is the busiest. In winter, trails can be icy and the upper viewpoint is closed—bring traction if you go.

Practical Notes

• No drones in the national park.
• The water is brutally cold—skip the swim.
• Dogs are allowed on leash.
• No on‑site restrooms noted; plan accordingly.
