Banff National Park, AB
Two tea houses, a Highline traverse, and a Lake Louise circuit
Overview
Choose the circuit if you want both tea houses and are comfortable with a long day on mountain trail. If nearly nine miles is too much, Lake Agnes and Plain of Six Glaciers are also walked as separate out-and-back hikes; each has its own tea house, but neither is this combined loop. Lake Louise Lakeshore parking is paid, and the route starts from that lot. Dogs are allowed on park trails in summer unless posted otherwise; keep them leashed and under physical control throughout. The upper route crosses avalanche terrain above tree line, so check current trail and avalanche information before setting out, especially from November through June.

Lake Louise and the Lakeshore“You're coming up on Lake Louise, where the public shore looks straight toward Victoria Glacier between the mountains. You don't need a big hike for that view.”

Trail guide
The Lake Louise Tea House Circuit is a hard 14.3 km (8.9 mi) loop from the lakeshore, linking Lake Agnes and Plain of Six Glaciers by the Highline and visiting both tea houses. Plan about five hours of walking, then add time for stops. This is a substantial half-day hike, with sustained climbs and steep stairs. Parks Canada's figure is 14.3 km; the mapped route closes at 14.69 km (9.15 mi), a small difference between the published distance and the detailed path line. The Plain tea house sits beyond the Highline junction, so the route retraces that short spur before crossing the Highline to complete the circuit.
Start at the Lake Louise Lakeshore parking lot and follow the path along the lake toward the trail junctions. The pale turquoise water comes from glacially fed creeks at the lake's far end, and the shoreline looks back toward the historic Chateau and surrounding peaks. Once the climb begins, the broad trail rises through spruce-fir forest. Mirror Lake lies beneath the steep cliffs of Big Beehive; above it, switchbacks and two steep wooden staircases beside the outlet waterfall bring you to Lake Agnes. The tea house sits beside the lake in a high mountain basin below Mount Whyte and Mount Niblock. The lake is a natural place to pause, but on this circuit you still have the Highline and the second tea house ahead.
The Big Beehive section climbs to a ridge above Lake Louise, where the view opens over the lake and toward the surrounding peaks. The Highline connection begins in forest, then emerges into open meadows with a broad view of the Lake Louise valley's high headwalls. Mount Lefroy, Mount Victoria and Mount Aberdeen rise above the valley; old moraines and glacial outwash shape the lower slopes, and remaining glaciers cling to the peaks. This open traverse is the route's big change from the wooded ascent to Lake Agnes. Stay on the mapped line at the Plain of Six junction and turn back toward the Highline after the tea house; continuing uphill to the farther glacier viewpoint adds a different, longer hike.
The Plain of Six Glaciers tea house is the second refreshment stop on this route, reached on the branch from the Highline junction. Allow time to enjoy the open valley, then retrace the branch to rejoin the loop. Both tea houses are seasonal and typically operate from early June to early October; confirm the current year's dates before counting on refreshments. When they are closed, the circuit remains a hike, but the tea-house service is unavailable.
