Ross Lake Trail

This is a 14.2 km out-and-back to Ross Lake, with about 7.1 km each way. Allow four to five hours, including time at the lake. The route starts behind Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise, crosses the Continental Divide, and ends at a small lake in British Columbia.

From the Lake Louise lakeshore area, make your way behind the Chateau and take the signed Ross Lake route. The first part uses an old double-track road; farther on, it narrows into a winding forest trail. At the Divide Mountain junction, stay on the Ross Lake route and continue to the lake. The old road and ski-route signs can make the start confusing, so download the map before you leave.

This is a primitive, lightly maintained route with rolling terrain, roots, mud, and occasional deadfall rather than a polished lakeshore path. You’ll get a quiet forest walk and a clear geographic novelty as the trail crosses from Alberta into British Columbia. There are no services on the route, so pack water and food. If you need supplies, pick up a picnic in Lake Louise village before starting.

Check Parks Canada warnings and closures before setting out, especially around the Ross Lake and Great Divide corridor. Bear habitat is part of the deal, and dogs should stay leashed. At the lake, include the shoreline and surrounding peaks in photos for scale, then return the way you came; do not continue onto the separate Great Divide route unless you have researched that longer trip.
