What Makes It Different

The namesake “scar” is the hook: loggers once sent felled trees down these steep slopes, yelling “ballhoot” as a warning. Those runs carved slashes in the forest that are still visible across the mountainside—a rare, tangible reminder of the area’s logging past.

Expect an open panorama across the Raven Fork/Oconaluftee corridor with Hyatt Ridge in the distance. It’s not the Parkway’s most dramatic vista, but the scene shines in good light and during fall color.
