Big Witch Overlook (MP 461.9)

Overview

Set at MP 461.9 just north of Cherokee, Big Witch Overlook sits around 4,160 feet and offers a quick breather with a touch of culture. It’s not the Parkway’s grandest panorama, but it is a handy stop with room to park and a couple of picnic tables.

What You’ll See

Expect close, forested ridgelines and a slice of the Cherokee Valley rather than sweeping, far-off layers. In fall, the view pops with color; outside leaf season it’s more subtle—green, tree-covered slopes and near ridges.

The Name

The overlook honors Big Witch, a respected Cherokee medicine man known as the last Cherokee eagle killer, who lived to age 90 and died in 1898. It’s a small but meaningful nod to the area’s deep Cherokee heritage.

Wildlife

Nothing special is singled out here, though you may spot common Parkway birds or the occasional deer. This is not a dedicated wildlife-viewing stop.

• Parking is generous for a pull-off, making it an easy in-and-out break.
