Big Witch Overlook (MP 461.9)

Expect close, forested ridgelines and a slice of the Cherokee Valley rather than sweeping, far-off layers. In fall, the view pops with color; outside leaf season it’s more subtle—green, tree-covered slopes and near ridges.

The overlook honors Big Witch, a respected Cherokee medicine man known as the last Cherokee eagle killer, who lived to age 90 and died in 1898. It’s a small but meaningful nod to the area’s deep Cherokee heritage.

Nothing special is singled out here, though you may spot common Parkway birds or the occasional deer. This is not a dedicated wildlife-viewing stop.

• Facilities are minimal: no restrooms, no trails.
• Parking is generous for a pull-off, making it an easy in-and-out break.
• Fog can sock in the view; if it’s a whiteout, move along and try another overlook.

• A convenient pause near the south end of the Parkway
• Two well-placed picnic tables for a low-key lunch
• Typically less crowded than the marquee viewpoints
