Set at Milepost 327.3 in McKinney Gap (elev. 2,815 ft), North Cove Valley Overlook is a classic quick pullout with big payoff. The view plunges over North Cove and Peppers Creek Valley, with Dobson Knob anchoring the scene and distant ridges stacking into the horizon. Look west and you’ll spot the Historic Orchard at Altapass tucked on the slope below.
You get both a sweeping mountain panorama and a tangible piece of local culture. A wayside exhibit here interprets the early "Crest of the Blue Ridge Highway" concept, adding context to the Parkway’s route. The nearby Historic Orchard at Altapass—established in 1908 to serve the Clinchfield Railroad—thrives thanks to a frost-resistant thermal layer on these slopes.
Not a wildlife hotspot, but like many open Parkway overlooks you might catch songbirds, the occasional wild turkey, or deer working the edges—binoculars help if you’re scanning distant slopes.
This overlook is wide-open and unobstructed—bring a wide-angle lens for the valley’s depth and layering. On clear days, distant ridges stack beautifully for those classic Blue Ridge layers.
If you’ve got extra time, pair the stop with a visit to the Historic Orchard at Altapass for a dose of local history and seasonal fruit.
