A classic Parkway pullout at MP 323, Bear Den Overlook serves up a big, open sweep of Blue Ridge ridgelines from about 3,360 feet. It’s the kind of stop where you step out of the car and the view hits immediately—no hiking required.
Plenty of overlooks deliver views, but Bear Den adds an acoustic experience. The amphitheater topography makes this a rare spot that’s as good for listening as it is for looking.

Expect a broad, more-than-180-degree vista where ridges stack to the horizon and distant mountains fade into that signature blue haze. Directly below, a bowl-shaped, forested "natural amphitheater" carries sound upward—on quiet days you’ll clearly hear birds calling from far down the slope.
Bears once denned in this area—hence the name—but they’re not reported here now. The reliable show is the soundtrack: a variety of native birds whose songs rise from the woods below. Bring binoculars if you like to pair sound with sightings.
