What to expect

This is a short, easy loop with an outsized reward: a stone-walled balcony perched above Linville Gorge with long views toward Grandfather Mountain and Table Rock. The approach to the main overlook is paved; the loop section is a natural dirt path with some roots, rocks, and a few stone steps, but grades stay gentle and the walking is straightforward. Start at the Chestoa View Overlook at Blue Ridge Parkway Milepost 320.8. The main balcony is the money shot—broad vistas into Linville Gorge, with Grandfather Mountain to the left and Table Rock to the right. Past the overlook, the loop winds through a mixed oak forest with Carolina hemlock and white pine, plus pockets of mountain laurel that keep much of the route shaded. Logistics and access

Trailhead parking is a paved lot right at the overlook (MP 320.8). You’ll find picnic tables but no permanent concessions or restrooms, so bring water and snacks. Best time to hike

You can walk this loop year-round. For foliage and crisp views, mid-to-late October is prime; spring and summer bring wildflowers, lush greens, and cooler temps thanks to elevation. For fewer people and softer light, aim for early morning or late afternoon on weekdays. Need-to-know

While the overlook approach is smooth, the full loop has uneven tread and steps, so it’s not wheelchair- or stroller-friendly. Stay on the signed path—there are drop-offs near the viewpoints.
