Overview
Roanoke Mountain Overlook sits atop a short, scenic loop off the Parkway near milepost 120. It’s a classic high perch with broad looks over the Roanoke Valley, the city skyline, and layers of Blue Ridge ridges. Because it’s tucked off the main road, it tends to feel calmer than the big-name pullouts.
Access is half the fun: a four‑mile, one‑way mountain loop with several pullouts and short leg‑stretchers. At the summit, you get sweeping valley-and-ridge panoramas; along the way, other signed overlooks focus on different angles (including city views). A curious “crater‑like” formation near the summit ridge adds a little geologic intrigue.

Expect the usual Blue Ridge mix: songbirds and hawks riding the thermals, deer in the woods, and the occasional black bear in the broader area. The elevated, open viewpoints can be nice for casual birdwatching—bring binoculars if that’s your thing.
The loop is narrow and one‑way, so you’re committed once you enter. Trailers are not permitted, and nervous drivers should take it slow around the bends. The road can close seasonally or after severe weather, so it’s wise to have a Plan B overlook on the main Parkway.
Aim for golden hour for layered ridgelines and city glow. Pack a medium zoom for compressing ridges and a wide lens for the big valley sweep. If you’re picnicking, time it for late afternoon and linger for sunset.
