Why hike this trail

If you’re already cruising the Parkway and want a short, scenic breather with moving water and a touch of industrial history, this is it. At just 0.35 miles one way, it’s a mellow descent from the Roanoke River Overlook down toward the river with multiple vantage points, including a look at the early‑1900s Niagara Dam and its powerhouse. Expect a pleasant leg‑stretch, not a destination hike. Even the National Park Service frames it as a nice stop rather than a must‑do detour [nps.gov](https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/roanoke-river-trail.htm).

Route overview

Start from the Roanoke River Overlook (milepost 114.9). The first stretch is paved before transitioning to a traditional dirt path. About halfway down, the trail splits:

  • Fisherman’s Trail: a steep spur with about 200 steps to the river’s edge—great for anglers with a valid license.
  • Loop/overlook option: continue beneath the Parkway bridge to a small pedestrian overlook for different river and dam perspectives.

Total walking is short; plan roughly 15–30 minutes depending on how much gawking you do at the overlooks [nps.gov](https://www.nps.gov/places/roanoke-river-overlook.htm).

What you’ll see

  • Roanoke River gorge views from multiple angles, with the most open sightlines from the pedestrian sidewalk on the Parkway bridge.
  • Niagara Dam (completed in 1906) and the adjacent powerhouse—an interesting mix of natural gorge and early hydroelectric history—plus occasional train activity along the corridor.
  • Wooded slopes, benches for quick breathers, and shifting perspectives as you drop from the overlook (one of the Parkway’s lower elevations around 985 ft) toward the river.

Know before you go

  • Surfaces shift from pavement to dirt, with a steady descent and steep stairs on the Fisherman’s Trail. Expect slick steps after rain and possible ice in winter.
  • Foot traffic only: no bikes or horses. Pets are allowed on leash (6 ft max).
  • Fishing is permitted with a valid license. Swimming isn’t recommended due to strong currents.
  • The overlook has benches and trash receptacles but no picnic tables. Parking is straightforward—about 35 spaces at the overlook trailhead [nps.gov](https://www.nps.gov/thingstodo/roanoke-river-trail.htm) [nps.gov](https://www.nps.gov/places/roanoke-river-overlook.htm).

Best time to hike

Open year‑round. Spring and fall offer the clearest views and comfortable temps. Summer is lush (read: more foliage blocking views), and winter can be icy right after storms. For the most open look at the dam and river any time of year, walk the pedestrian sidewalk on the bridge for the best angle.

Pros

  • Multiple vantage points, including a small pedestrian overlook under the bridge
  • About 200-step Fisherman’s Trail gives rare, easy river access on the Parkway

Cons

  • Summer foliage can block river views away from the bridge
  • Short and modest; not worth a special detour on its own

Parking

Park at Roanoke River Overlook (MP 114.9). ~35 spaces, benches, trash receptacles at the trailhead.

Caution

Steep stairs to the river (about 200 steps) can be slick after rain; expect icy spots in winter. Strong currents—do not swim. Not wheelchair accessible.
