If you want a memorable wildlife moment, this is it: the Centre is home base for Britain’s only free‑ranging reindeer herd. The experience is intentionally calm and respectful—expect reindeer to wander right around you during a guided hill trip, but with a hands‑off approach that keeps the animals relaxed.

How the Visit Works

You collect tickets at the Centre in Glenmore, then drive your own vehicle several miles uphill to the separate meeting point for the guided walk. Arrive at least 20 minutes early—once the group leaves, you can’t catch up and there are no refunds. The walk is on open, often uneven ground, so dress for mountain weather and wear sturdy footwear.

What You’ll See

Reindeer. Lots of them, living out on vast mountainsides much like their sub‑arctic homes. Guides share how ground, rock and tree lichens shape this habitat and the herd’s diet, and you’ll usually get a short, structured hand‑feeding window. The rest of the time, you’re simply among them—quietly observing in big Highland scenery.

Reindeer were reintroduced here in 1952 after the founders recognized the Cairngorms as ideal habitat. Today the herd roams freely over tens of thousands of acres, and the Centre exists to separate fact from festive fable with solid natural history and gentle encounters.

On-Site Notes

The Centre grounds include paddocks and an exhibition area, though these may be closed for refurbishment at times; hill trips run as normal. There’s a small gift shop for souvenirs and adoptions.

Best Times to Visit

The Centre typically operates 10 AM–5 PM daily. Crowds build through midday, peaking early–mid afternoon on some weekdays; it’s noticeably quieter around 10–11 AM and again after 4 PM. Expect extra demand during school holidays and the run‑up to Christmas. For the calmest feel (and easier parking near lay-bys), go morning or late afternoon.
