Cairngorm Reindeer Centre

The Cairngorm Reindeer Centre is the Glenmore visitor base for the Cairngorm herd, with a shop, exhibition and seasonal paddock, plus guided trips to see the free-ranging reindeer on the mountain. Choose the hill trip for the close encounter; the paddock and exhibition are a shorter, easier visit, but may have only a small rotating group. Prebook the hill trip, especially for school holidays, and leave time to check in before driving to its separate meeting area.

The whole outing usually takes about 1½ to 2 hours. After check-in, you drive your own vehicle uphill to the meeting car park, then follow a herder on foot. The approach is on exposed, uneven ground with rocky steps; from May to January it is usually at least 20 minutes each way, and from February to April it can be steeper, snowy or icy and take as long as 45 minutes each way. Grippy waterproof boots and warm waterproof layers make sense in any season.

At the herd, the herder explains the animals and offers a brief hand-feeding session. You can feed them but not pet them. The walk is not a casual stroll, especially in winter, so consider the rough footing and your comfort with slopes before booking.

The paddocks and exhibition are the more accessible option: both are wheelchair accessible, and visitors can see a small group when the reindeer are down at Glenmore. The animals rotate between the paddock and the hills, so this is not a promise of a large herd or the same close interaction as a hill trip. The paddocks are seasonal and normally have no reindeer on display between the end of the February school holidays and Easter; check the seasonal opening before making a special trip. Visitors cannot pet or feed reindeer in the paddock.

Mikel Utsi and Dr. Ethel Lindgren brought the first seven reindeer from Sweden in 1952: two bulls and five cows. The founders had recognised the Cairngorms' lichen-rich ground as suitable reindeer pasture. After an early grazing trial at Moormore, the Forestry Commission granted the herd use of 1,100 acres at Airgod-meall, translated as Silver-Mount, in 1954. Many summer hill trips still visit that mountainside.

Reindeer browse heather, sedges, lichens, blaeberry and birch, with a balanced supplementary feed when needed. On the hill trip, the herder supplies the food visitors may offer; the animals are otherwise hands-off. The Centre's small paddock group is only one part of a free-ranging herd whose location changes across the Cairngorms.

The Centre is in Glenmore, about six miles east of Aviemore. Use the operator's directions rather than relying on a Scottish postcode alone. There is a small car park opposite the entrance, and parking is charged in the Glenmore area and at the hill meeting point. There are no toilets at the Centre or on the hill trip; public toilets are about 200 metres away beside the Glenmore bus stop, so use them before setting off. Dogs, including assistance dogs, cannot join the hill trip or enter the paddocks, though they are welcome in the shop.
