Founded in 1897, it stands at 355 metres, making it one of Scotland’s highest distilleries. Its site was chosen for clear spring water and plentiful peat in nearby bogs, practical resources that shaped where whisky could be made.
Dalwhinnie’s Gaelic-derived name refers to a meeting place, linked to cattle-droving routes that came together through the mountains. That gives the distillery a connection to an older reason people travelled through this part of the Highlands.
Book a tour ahead if you want to see production and take part in a tasting. The visitor centre has a shop and bar, and chocolate pairings are part of some tasting experiences. There’s accessible parking by the entrance and an accessible toilet in the retail area. The production route has steps and two staircases with no lift, so it isn’t wheelchair accessible, though a tasting can be arranged for visitors with access requirements.
